The Port of Houston handles about two-thirds of all the containerized cargo in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. It´s container handling facilities are among the finest in the nation. In order to meet peak demands, the port is seeking technological solutions to improve operation’s efficiency and service quality under environmentally friendly conditions. A modernization project of $1.4 billion is taking place, including $700 million in improvements. One of these investments is nine new rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, which will be delivered to the Bayport Container Terminal in autumn 2018. The RTGs are mobile cranes used in intermodal operations to ground or stack containers. The company Konekranes will supply each of the new RGTs, with a lifting capacity of 50,000 kg. In addition, they will be equipped with Konecranes’ Active Load Control, designed to eliminate container sway to increase container-handling performance. The machinery will be environmentally safe with features like LED lights, anti-collision system and green diesel generators with the latest EPA requirements. “We have experienced a great partnership with Port Houston for a period of over 15 years,” said Jussi Suhonen, sales director for port solutions – Americas region at Konecranes. “This important order is a great demonstration of the partnership and values that we share.” The first Konecranes RTGs ordered by Port Houston were delivered in 2003.
